Ticks are small creatures. It is very often not even possible to see them moving around. That’s why it is hard to protect yourself from ticks when you are in nature.
What does a tick look like
As mentioned before, ticks are small insects. Ticks need blood meals to complete their lifecycle. Ticks have been around for more then 90 million (!) years. There are more than 800 species of ticks all over the world. The two most familiar ticks: Ixodidae (also known also known as hard ticks) and Argasidae (also known as soft ticks). Those are the two ticks that can transmit diseases to humans. These tickborne disease occur worldwide. It is an increasing problem. Each year there are more cases of ill people due to a tick bite.
How do Ticks live
Ticks have a complex lifecycle:
- Adult male
Except form the egg all the phases in the lifecycle need blood meals. That’s why they search from it in nature and from humans. The female tick (hard tick) causes the most bites amongst humans. Ticks do not jump, drop or fly. They reach out to a host and simple hold on to it. That’s why it is hard for people to notice when there are ticks on your body.
How to protect yourself form tick bites:
- Be aware what clothes you wear. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, high boots.
- Simply tuck in your pants. All skin that is covered can’t be reached by the little creatures.
- Anti-tick socks are a big help.
- Before you go inside, check your body for ticks/tick-bites
- And lastly, wear light-coloured clothing.
The measures mentioned above aren’t very drastic, yet they are effective. The small things make the difference. Anti-tick clothing and the other measures mentioned above should make you go into the nature without worrying about getting bitten by a tick.
